Do I Need a 1/3 HP or a 1/2 HP Pump?
In our experience, we have found that a 1/3 HP pump is sufficient for the vast majority of installations, especially when you upgrade to one of our PHCC Pro Series pumps, which have a higher pumping capacity than most other brands. However, there are some circumstances that warrant installation of a higher-capacity pump.

First, if you know that your sump basin receives a lot of water (for example, if the water table in your area is known to be high), and you have had problems in the past with a 1/3 HP pump keeping up with the flow, you may consider upgrading. Also, if your existing pump is already 1/2 HP, we generally recommend staying with it, simply because it's difficult to gauge how much water might flow into your basin, and if your pump was upgraded in the past, there may have been a good reason to do so...

One caveat: if you have a small basin, or if your drain tile enters the basin low on the side (leaving little water capacity below the inlet pipe), you may want to be careful. If you install too large a pump into a small volume of water, it is possible that the pump could "short cycle", which means it may run for only a very short time before it shuts off. If the pump turns on & off too quickly, that could shorten it's lifespan.
